Discipleship Evangelism Missional Outreach

DISCIPLESHIP EVANGELISM consists of two distinct ministries:

  • DE – Discipleship Evangelism (Making Disciples)
  • MO – Missional Outreach (Empowerment to prosper)
Discipleship Evangelism
The DE is a tool that has been designed to systematically disciple not only new believers, but also leaders, pastors and church networks – strengthening larger churches through small group participation. These disciples can then teach others in their church, bringing everyone onto the same page in terms of their basic spiritual understanding. It is this multiplication of discipleship that makes it so powerful.

The Discipleship Evangelism (DE) program consists of 48 self-contained Lessons, covering all the basics of the Christian life – inclusive of scripture verses, text and questions. The DE is divided into 3 Books or Levels, each one consisting of 16 lessons. In order to reach the Nations, the DE program has been translated into multiple languages, which are available free to download in PDF format.  In January 2020 Level 1 was translated into Vietnamese and Hmong, and by June next year all three books would have been translated into both languages.

The DE program is currently translated into 30 languages, and is being used worldwide, including in countries like Africa, India, Europe, USA, Pacific Islands, China, South America and now Vietnam. They are presently translating it into Romanian, Lithuanian, Farsi, Japanese, Thailand and Myanmar.

The DE originated in our ministry head office, Andrew Wommack Ministries, USA.  My husband and I attended their affiliated Charis Bible College, from 2016-2018, and it is there that we first encountered the DE. The Ministry has about 600 employees and nearly 1,600 students in the USA, as well as over 80 colleges and offices around the world. Globally, we have over 6,000 students in our system at any one time, and our vision is to reach the world as ‘far and deep’ with the Gospel as possible.

FAR, means geographically, and DEEP means making disciples, (not just converts) which was the last instruction given by Jesus before he went to be with the Father.

We are not a church, and we don’t plant churches; as a ministry our heart is to make teaching material available to people free of charge, so the good news of Jesus can be shared. As a ministry we give away between 50-60% of our materials each year, and the DE completely free. Our goal is simply to bless and empower churches in their challenges to spread the Gospel;  to help equip, disciple and encourage, this is our only goal.

We have found the most effective means of discipling is in the small group setting. This provides for sharing, interactive discussion and learning, as well as building unity and trust through strong relationships. Small group is a powerful learning concept, and has the potential to transform individuals and communities alike.

God never said make ‘converts’ (although essential) He said ‘Go make disciples! Statistics show that only 15% of Christians ever continue in their faith. A huge part of this is because new believers are often not discipled. The four gospels refer to Jesus teaching 43 times, preaching 19 times, and preaching and teaching in the same verse, six times. This indicates that Jesus spent twice as much time teaching as He did preaching. Teaching is the basic building block for making disciples. Jesus was making disciples, not just converts.

The Greek word for “disciple” literally means “a learner,” and indicates “learning by endeavor” or what we would call “on-the-job training.” Jesus said in John 8:31, “If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed.” Anyone who meets this criterion is Jesus’ disciple.  A disciple is more than a convert. They want to learn, mature, and reproduce their faith in others.

What the Lord has started in you, He will also continue and complete. That is not to say that your success will be automatic; we have to cooperate with what God is wanting to do in our lives. Our faithfulness may always be suspect, but God’s faithfulness is never in question. It is always God’s will to continue and complete the good work He began in us.

Our two foundational scriptures for our Discipleship Evangelism Program is:

Matthew 28:18-19

All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching(Pupil / disciple / follower) them to obey everything that I have commanded you.

2 Timothy 2:1-2

You then my child, be strengthened by the grace that is in Christ Jesus.

And the things that you have heard from me among many witnesses, commit these to faithful men who will be able to teach others also.

We also acknowledge the importance of the following scriptures:

Ephesians 4:11-15

11 And He Himself gave some to be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, and some pastors and teachers, 12 for the equipping of the saints for the work of ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ.

Mark 16:15

Jesus said  ‘Go ye into all the world and preach the Gospel to every creature.

Romans 10:14

The Apostle Paul asks the question, ’How shall they believe in Him of whom they have  not heard? And how shall they hear without a preacher?

Matthew 24:14

And this Gospel of the Kingdom shall be preached in all the world, for a witness unto all nations: and then shall the end come.

All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make DISCIPLES of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded you.

MISSIONAL OUTREACH
One of the practical scriptural aims of providing the DE, is to get individuals to realize that GOD IS their source, not men, NGO’s etc., and to ‘teach them how to fish’, instead of always relying on others to give them ‘fish’. This occurs through two ways:
  1. Discipleship
Renewing their minds with the Word of God.
  1. Creating a Culture of Independency / Self-Sufficiency
Create a self-sustaining industry like Aquaponics, Fish Farming, Pig Farming etc.

Although there are times when the community is supported by our supplying clean water filters in churches, or by building churches or medical centers; by drilling bore holes, by supplying small loans for finance, or even by assisting with computers or servers for training; the main aim of our organization is to create a culture of interdependency and self-sufficiency. Some of the ways we do that is by teaching them to build compost toilets / interlocking bricks for their homes, and to construct permanent water filters.

One of the ways we have successfully started to do the above practically, is to support a ‘Pig Farming Project’ within the Hmong Community. To read all about this self-sustaining project, please refer to the article ‘Sustainable culture of Interdependency’ on the website.

Our foundational scriptures for our Missional Outreach Program is:

Deuteronomy 8:18-19

19 But you shall earnestly remember the Lord your God, for it is He Who gives you power to get wealth, that He may establish His covenant which He swore to your fathers, as it is this day.

Psalm 35:27

God DELIGHTS in the prosperity of His people.

Deuteronomy 28:12

The Lord will open the heavens, the storehouse of His bounty, to send rain on your land in season, and He will bless the work of your hands!

John 3:2

Beloved, I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper and be in health, even as thy soul prospers.” (God wants us to prosper in every area of our lives, including our finances.)

1 Timothy 6:10

For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. (Money is not evil, the love of it is.)

You then my child, be strengthened by the grace that is in Christ Jesus And the things that you have heard from me among many witnesses, COMMIT these to FAITHFUL MEN who will be able to TEACH others also.
